Taking notes during class is only part of the learning process. Without a clear system for organizing and reviewing information afterward, even detailed notes can become difficult to study from later.

Organizing your notes after jotting them down improves memory retention by giving the information a logical structure. It also forces your brain to confront the material further and develop an independent understanding beyond mere video/lecture transcription.

Much like how good studying allows you to recall information on test day, note organization is where you develop a deeper understanding of class subject matter. What you learn in class is foundational to exams or large group projects, so a strong note organization strategy comes with holistic benefits to your entire academic performance.

Here’s how you can organize your notes like a pro to optimize memory retention and improve your grades.

1) Mind Mapping

Mind mapping is a type of visual brainstorming technique that involves starting with a central idea, and then branching out into similar, related ideas that connect in some way. Most mind maps make use of written keywords or sentences, but some utilize images as well.

Mind maps work well because they mirror the way people naturally connect and organize ideas while learning:

  • Associative Processing. The human brain does not think linearly or process ideas in isolation. Instead, we use associative processing, where central ideas are connected to pre-existing ideas. Mind maps help students visualize that natural thought process.
  • Full Brain Engagement. Mind mapping utilizes both the left and right hemispheres of the brain. Creating a map blends the written and logical capabilities of the left hemisphere, with the visual abilities and big picture thinking of the right.
  • Since mind maps are non-linear and designed to be easily expanded upon, users can add as many new chains of information as they’d like, without disrupting any kind of linear order.

Mind mapping works best when used to understand a specific system or method of problem solving. By starting off with a central idea, users can break that idea into smaller, similar steps or concepts that create a better comprehension of the whole process.

2) Charting Method

Unlike mind mapping, the charting method is not a visual processing tool. Instead, it taps into your brain’s language and analytical abilities to explore concepts and the relations between them.

This method is simple: students create a grid chart, with study terms listed along one axis and descriptions/linked concepts along the other. Some examples of how this could be utilized include:

  • For a Historical War Exam: Battles, important figures, and other study terms along the Y-axis; basic descriptions, dates, and qualitative statistics (such as number of soldiers or civilians impacted) on the X-axis.
  • For a Health/Nutrition Quiz: Types of meat or produce along the y-axis; content of various macro and micronutrients along the X (e.g., a sweet potato has an approximated 1,200 mcg of Vitamin A per potato).
  • For Biology notes: List out the various organelles in a cell along the y-axis; explain their function and what kind of cell they are found in (e.g., plant or animal) along the X-axis.

Charts allow students to define and distinguish various smaller concepts within a unified whole. It may be easy to understand the basic gist of something like the American Civil War or cellular biology.

Where the real challenge lies are distinguishing smaller concepts within those larger fields. The roles William Sherman or Winfield Scott played in the Civil War, however, might not be immediate knowledge. Charts allow you the opportunity to change that.

3) SQ3R Method

The SQ3R method is a strong option for taking notes from textbooks and in-class readings. First described by an educational psychologist Francis P. Robinson in his 1941 book Effective Study, his methods and contributions to pedagogy have remained relevant for decades after their publication.

As implied by the acronymic name, the SQ3R method is broken down into five parts:

  • Start off by skimming, or surveying, the text. Take notice of subheadings, and develop a basic understanding of the content
  • Turn each heading into a question. For example, “Probability vs. Quota Sampling” becomes “What is the difference between Probability and Quota Sampling?”
  • Read the text under each subheading with the intent of answering the question.
  • After you’ve read the section and developed an understanding, recite the answer to that question in your own words.
  • Once this is accomplished for all subheadings, review your answers and information.

When reading long blocks of text, figuring out which information is worth retaining vs. the minutiae can be challenging. The SQ3R method places direct focus on the central ideas of a given text.

4) AI Options for Notetaking

Artificial Intelligence has left a dramatic mark on educational and workplace environments worldwide. Note organization is no exception; developers have introduced a wide range of innovative tools over the past few years.

Google’s NotebookLM is the most direct example, being a tool designed to scrape information from uploaded sources and compile them into summaries or notes. Some of its capabilities include:

  • Support for a diverse array of sources (websites, pdfs, google docs/slides/sheets, and YouTube transcripts)
  • Finding sources online
  • Up to 50 sources per session
  • Audio chat responses
  • Generating structured study tools (e.g. timelines and mind maps)
  • Syncing of chats from Google Gemini for further research

Transcriptions

Interviews, speeches, and recorded lectures are now easier than ever to put into written form if necessary or preferable. Otter.ai is a tool that transcribes audio files up to 4 hours in length (depending on your plan), including the ability to distinguish between different speakers.
